CBI Takes Over Suvendu Adhikari Aide Murder Probe, SIT Formed

Dhaka: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation into the murder of Chandranath Rath, a close aide and personal assistant to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, according to reports by India TV News. The agency has also constituted a seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by an officer of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) rank to handle the politically sensitive case.

Rath was shot dead in the Madhyamgram area of West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district shortly after the Assembly election results were announced. Reports stated that the attack took place on a public road while he was returning home. He suffered critical gunshot injuries and was later declared dead at a private hospital.

The case was initially being investigated by the West Bengal Police and a state-level SIT. However, the probe has now been transferred to the CBI following recommendations from the state government. According to officials quoted in reports, the central agency has re-registered the FIR filed earlier by the police and started an independent investigation into the killing.

The West Bengal Police had earlier arrested three suspects from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in connection with the murder. Investigators reportedly tracked leads through technical surveillance and digital evidence, including a UPI transaction made at a toll plaza. Authorities believe multiple individuals may have been involved in planning and executing the attack.

The murder triggered strong political reactions across West Bengal, with BJP leaders describing the incident as a targeted political killing. The Trinamool Congress denied the allegations and had also supported demands for an impartial investigation.

The newly formed CBI SIT is expected to continue examining all aspects of the case, including the alleged conspiracy behind Rath’s killing.
