BSF Intercepts Drone-Delivered Heroin Worth ₹40 Crore Along India-Pakistan Border
Srinagar: Security forces prevented a major narcotics smuggling attempt along the India-Pakistan International Border on Saturday, seizing a large batch of heroin suspected to have been delivered by an unmanned aerial vehicle from across the border. The Border Security Force (BSF) and Jammu police jointly recovered more than 6.5 kg of the illegal drug in the R S Pura sector of Jammu, with an estimated international market value of around ₹40 crore.
Officials said the operation began after BSF troops observed possible drone activity near the border late on February 13-14, prompting a cordon and search mission in Nai Basti Karotana village in the Baspur area. During the early hours of Saturday, personnel discovered two yellow packets in nearby fields containing the contraband, which were then seized. A formal recovery memo was drawn up in the presence of a magistrate.

Authorities characterised the interception as a significant achievement in the fight against cross-border drug trafficking. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and investigations are ongoing to determine the precise source and intended recipients of the seized heroin. Officials have said they expect further developments as inquiries into the smuggling network continue.

The recovery occurred against the backdrop of an earlier related incident, where police in Kathua district arrested two individuals allegedly linked to a Pakistan-based narcotics operation that used drones to drop smaller consignments of heroin near Nagri village. Approximately 150 g of the drug was recovered in that case, and the suspects were booked under the NDPS Act.
The ongoing use of drones to transport narcotics across the border highlights the challenges faced by Indian security agencies in curbing sophisticated smuggling tactics. Forces remain vigilant and continue to monitor border areas for suspicious activities to disrupt further illegal drug movements.
