Bhabanipur Counting Stalls Again, Why Did Mamata, Suvendu Rush To Bhabanipur Counting Centre?

Kolkata : The Bhabanipur assembly constituency, which witnessed a high-voltage battle between the Chief Minister and the sitting MLA, Mamata Banerjee and her bte noire, Suvendu Adhikari, is at the centre of a lot of controversy as the counting was halted several times on Monday. The Election Commission of India (ECI) did not update the numbers on its website for a few hours, triggering a major panic in the TMC camp.

However, it came to a standstill again after the 13th round. Bhabanipur started grabbing national headlines from the day the BJP fielded Suvendu Adhikari against Banerjee, with many predicting a similar contest like Nandigram in the 2021 assembly election. And the trend continued on the counting day as well. The contest between Adhikari and Banerjee witnessed sharp swings throughout Monday. Adhikari first secured a lead in the morning. However, Banerjee quickly narrowed the gap and moved ahead briefly around the seventh round of counting.

Adhikari was quick enough to reduce the margin. By the 12th round, the margin between the two stood at more than 7,000 votes, and after the 12th round, the difference between the two narrowed to more than 5,000 votes. Following the allegations, Kajari Bandopadhay, Mamata Banerjee’s sister-in-law and a local councillor, visited the counting centre. As soon as she tried entering, a section of BJP supporters started protesting against her.
