Banks across India will remain shut on either May 27 or May 28, 2026, for Bakrid, also known as Eid-ul-Zuha or Id-Uz-Zuha, with the exact date differing by state following decisions by the central government and certain state administrations.
The central government announced that its administrative offices in Delhi would observe the holiday on May 28 instead of the originally notified May 27. The Telangana government similarly shifted its Bakrid holiday to May 28. As a result, banking operations will see a staggered closure pattern depending on local notifications.
Customers are strongly advised to check the bank holiday schedule for their specific state before visiting branches or scheduling time-sensitive transactions.
States Observing Holiday on May 27, 2026
Banks will remain closed in the following states and union territories for Bakrid: Tripura, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Manipur, Jammu, Kerala, Nagaland, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, and Srinagar.
States Observing Holiday on May 28, 2026
Closures will apply in Mizoram, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Jammu and Srinagar, Goa, Meghalaya, and Bihar.
The variation arises because, while the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) directs banks to close for major festivals like Bakrid, the precise date is determined by moon sighting and is reflected in state-specific holiday calendars.

Bakrid, or Eid-al-Adha, commemorates the spirit of sacrifice and is observed on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah.
For context, the May 2026 bank holiday calendar also includes closures for other occasions such as Maharashtra Day/Buddha Pournima/May Day on May 1, Rabindranath Tagore’s birthday on May 9, and Kazi Nazrul Islam’s birthday on May 26.
Banking customers in overlapping or dual-holiday locations like Jammu and Srinagar should exercise extra caution regarding transaction timelines. Those planning financial activities during this period are recommended to use digital banking services where possible or confirm local branch status directly.
