Guwahati: Assam’s flood crisis worsened on Wednesday after 10 more people died in rain related incidents over the past 24 hours, taking the human toll higher as relentless monsoon rains continued to inundate large parts of the state. Official data showed that more than six lakh people across several districts are currently grappling with the impact of the floods, with thousands forced to take shelter in relief camps.
The latest fatalities were reported from Sivasagar, Jorhat, Charaideo, Dhemaji and Karbi Anglong districts. While Sivasagar and Jorhat reported three deaths each, Charaideo recorded two fatalities. One person each died in Dhemaji and Karbi Anglong, according to the state authorities.
The floodwaters have submerged hundreds of villages, damaged roads and embankments, and cut off connectivity in several areas. With rivers continuing to swell after days of heavy rainfall, many residents remain stranded, while fresh inundation has been reported from low lying regions.
Rescue operations are in full swing, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the police and district administration working to evacuate people from marooned villages. Relief camps and distribution centres have been set up across the affected districts, providing food, drinking water and essential supplies to displaced families.
The floods have also dealt a significant blow to agriculture. Thousands of hectares of standing crops remain under water, raising fears of substantial losses for farmers at a crucial stage of the cultivation season. Officials are continuing to assess the extent of the damage to crops, homes and public infrastructure.
Water levels in the Brahmaputra and several of its tributaries remain above the danger mark at multiple locations, keeping authorities on alert. Disaster management officials are closely monitoring the situation as forecasts indicate the possibility of more rainfall in parts of the state.
Flooding is a recurring challenge during Assam’s monsoon season, but this year’s spell has once again exposed the vulnerability of thousands of families living in low lying and riverbank areas. Apart from disrupting transportation and education, the floods have affected access to healthcare, clean drinking water and other basic services in several districts.
The state government has instructed district administrations to intensify rescue and relief operations and ensure timely assistance reaches those living in the worst hit areas. Residents have also been advised to avoid flooded roads, remain alert to official warnings and cooperate with evacuation efforts wherever necessary.
As the monsoon continues to lash the region, the focus remains on saving lives and providing relief to affected communities. With river levels yet to stabilise and rain forecast in the coming days, officials warn that the situation could remain challenging before signs of improvement emerge.
