Afghanistan Earthquake Rattles Delhi-NCR, North India and Pakistan; No Casualties Reported

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region on Friday night, sending tremors across wide stretches of North India and parts of Pakistan.

The jolts hit at around 9:50 pm, triggering panic in several cities. Residents rushed out of homes and office buildings as the shaking lasted a few seconds. Reports came in from Noida, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Dehradun, and from Jammu and Kashmir including Poonch, Srinagar, and Udhampur.

In high-rise buildings, people reported household items visibly moving. Baldev Chand, a Chandigarh resident living on the second floor of a flat, said: “I felt a strong jolt which lasted for a few seconds.”

Social media filled up quickly. X user Vaishali Poddar, posting from Kashmir, wrote that she had never felt tremors that strong before. A Delhi user described fans and beds shaking from the intensity. Several others noted an unusual combination the earthquake hit Delhi-NCR during unexpected rainfall.

The tremors also crossed into Pakistan, reaching Islamabad, Peshawar, parts of Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. No casualties or structural damage have been reported so far. The epicentre of the quake is yet to be officially confirmed.
