Adhik Maas 2026: Purushottam Maas Begins Tomorrow

New Delhi — The sacred Adhik Maas, also known as Purushottam Maas, commences on May 17, 2026, and will continue until June 15. This extra lunar month, which does not occur annually, serves to synchronize the lunar calendar of approximately 354 days with the solar calendar of 365 days, ensuring festivals align with their appropriate seasons.

Beyond its astronomical purpose, Adhik Maas holds profound religious importance in Hinduism. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, referred to as Purushottam, the period is considered highly auspicious for spiritual practices. Devotees believe that prayers, charity, and meditation performed during this time yield multiplied spiritual benefits, transforming the month into an extended opportunity for devotion and self-reflection.

Recommended Practices During Adhik Maas

This month is viewed as an ideal time for accumulating merit through positive actions. Key observances include:

Worship of Lord Vishnu: Daily recitation of Vishnu Sahasranama or listening to the Satyanarayan Katha is encouraged. Sincere devotion takes precedence over elaborate rituals.

Charity (Daan): Giving alms, such as food (ann daan), clothing, or lamps (deep daan), is said to bring amplified rewards. Helping the needy is highlighted as particularly effective.

Chanting and Austerity: Regular japa of mantras like “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya,” ideally 108 times with a tulsi mala, along with optional fasting, helps focus the mind on the divine.

Scriptural Study: Reading sacred texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, Shrimad Bhagavatam, or Ramayana is advised to gain wisdom and apply it to daily life.

Activities to Avoid

To maintain the month’s spiritual emphasis, certain actions are traditionally discouraged:

– Auspicious events like marriages, mundan (head-shaving ceremonies), or housewarming (griha pravesh).

– Major purchases, such as a new home, vehicle, or expensive jewelry.

– Initiating new ventures, including starting a business or construction projects.

These restrictions aim to shift attention away from material desires toward inner purification and spirituality.

Full-Month Observance

Those undertaking a complete fast during Purushottam Maas follow a simple sattvic diet, typically eating once a day with fruits, milk, or fasting-appropriate foods, while avoiding onion, garlic, grains, and non-vegetarian items. The routine begins early with Brahmamuhurta rising, bath, and worship.

The Legend of Purushottam Maas

According to tradition from the Padma Purana, this extra month was once known as Mal Maas and felt neglected as no auspicious activities were performed in it. It approached Lord Vishnu, who adopted it, naming it after himself as Purushottam Maas. Vishnu promised special blessings and multiplied merits to those who engage in selfless worship and good deeds during this period, elevating its status to one of the most holy times.

Adhik Maas provides a valuable window for spiritual growth and introspection in the Hindu calendar.
