Abhijit Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, arrived in Delhi on Wednesday and urged his supporters to gather at Central Park in Connaught Place on Friday carrying the national flag.
In a video message, Dipke said waving the Tricolour is a fundamental expression of patriotism and not a criminal act. He stated that the state’s response to dissent would not silence people and called on every citizen who believes in democratic rights to reach the venue with the flag. He added that if the administration chooses to arrest peaceful citizens simply for holding the national flag, it should prepare its jails.
Earlier in Nagpur, Dipke said the arrest of his associates Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka represented an attempt to impose an undeclared Emergency. He asked why people were being detained for five days merely for waving the Tricolour at Jantar Mantar and questioned whether displaying the national flag had become a punishable act.
Das and Ranka were remanded in judicial custody for five days after being detained in connection with the alleged unfurling of the Tricolour at Jantar Mantar.
