“Want To Die As An Indian” 94-Year-Old Gives Up US Citizenship

In order to spend her last days as an Indian citizen, an Andhra-born woman has renounced her American citizenship, which she obtained more than 20 years ago. The final wish of 94-year-old Kondragunta Mahalakshmamma is to live out her days as an Indian citizen in her homeland.

After her husband passed away, Mahalakshmamma relocated to the US, according to a Times of India article. At the time, Buchaiah Choudhary, her son, was employed in Petersburg, Virginia as an oncologist.

Mahalakshmamma obtained US citizenship in 2000. After living abroad for over eighteen years, she returned to India in 2018 when her son started working at the NRI Hospital in Mangalagiri.

A video circulating online shows Mahalakshmamma visiting officials to accelerate her application for Indian citizenship.

The 94-year-old comes from Chinthagumpala village in Bapatla, Andhra Pradesh’s Chinaganjam mandal. On Wednesday, she made an appearance before J Venkata Murali, the Bapatla District Collector. She asked the District Collector to grant her Indian citizenship as soon as possible, accompanied by her son.

She informed authorities that she has already given up her American citizenship and wishes to regain her Indian citizenship.
