3 Dead, 12 Hurt As Himachal Roadways Bus Plunges Into Deep Gorge

Dehradun : At least three passengers lost their lives and several others were injured after a Himachal Roadways bus veered off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun district on Tuesday morning, authorities said. The accident took place on the Meenak Road near Kuanu in the Kalsi area, a stretch known for its winding terrain and steep drops.

The bus, operated by Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) and carrying more than 30 passengers, was travelling from Chaupal-Nerwa in Himachal Pradesh towards Paonta Sahib when it allegedly lost control and fell into the ravine around 10 a.m. local time, officials confirmed.

According to the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), two women and a man died at the scene. In addition, roughly seven to ten passengers sustained serious injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Rescue and relief efforts were immediately launched by SDRF teams from Dakpathar, Chakrata, Mori and Tiuni, along with local police, who rushed to the accident site following the distress call.

Local villagers were among the first responders, helping authorities extract survivors from the wreckage and rush them to medical facilities. The challenging geography and the depth of the gorge made initial rescue operations difficult, but emergency personnel continued working to reach all affected passengers.

Officials have not yet determined the exact cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest the bus may have skidded off the road while negotiating a bend, a common hazard on the narrow hillside route. Authorities are investigating further to establish what led to the loss of control.

In the aftermath, medical teams throughout the district were placed on high alert to handle the influx of injured passengers. Senior government officials are monitoring the situation closely and coordinating additional support for the relief operations as needed.
