Oman Coast Vessel Fire: All 24 Indian Seafarers Safe, Says Shipping Ministry

New Delhi: The Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) has sought immediate assistance for 24 Indian seafarers who were reportedly aboard a vessel attacked off the coast of Oman amid growing instability in the region linked to the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict.

According to a report by The Times of India, the union raised the alarm on Sunday through a post on X, urging Indian authorities and the Indian Navy to step in and assist the crew members stranded near the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz.

Vessel Reportedly Located Near Strait of Hormuz

In its social media appeal, FSUI stated that the vessel was positioned close to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes. The union tagged the Indian Navy, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, and other concerned authorities while requesting urgent action.

The post mentioned that the Indian sailors were seeking emergency support near the Oman coast. However, the union did not disclose the vessel’s name, details regarding the reported attack, or the condition of the crew members on board.

All 24 Indian Sailors Safe

Addressing an inter-ministerial briefing on recent developments in West Asia, Director in the Shipping Division, Opesh Kumar Sharma, informed that the fire was reported around 1.30 pm today.

On Monday, MT Marivex, off the coast of Oman carried 24 Indian sailors on board saying that all of them are safe and no harm has been caused to them. India’s Shipping Ministry confirmed all 24 Indian seafarers are safe, with coordination underway involving the Navy, Defence Ministry, and Omani authorities.

He added, ” All Indian seafarers are presently safe. We are coordinating with the MInistry of External Affairs, our Indian missions abroad, the Indian Navy, and the Ministry of Defence to ensure their safety.” He said, “We are in touch with the owners and we are trying to ascertain the facts. We are also in touch with the Ministry of External Affairs and our mission in Oman.” However, the vessel that was hit at 1.30 p.m local time did not reveal the cause.

The development comes amid heightened concerns over maritime security in West Asia due to escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. Commercial shipping activity around the Strait of Hormuz has remained under close monitoring because of fears surrounding disruptions to global trade and energy transportation routes.
