World Yogasana Championship to Begin in Ahmedabad on June 4; 114 Indians Among 529 Athletes From 60 Countries

New Delhi: Ahmedabad is set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and has also been proposed to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as India’s candidate city for the 2036 Olympics. Before that, however, the city will stage a unique global sporting event. The World Yogasana Championship will begin in Ahmedabad on June 4 and continue until June 8.

How Will Judges Award Points?

For the first time ever, a World Championship based on India’s globally renowned yogic tradition will be organised at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Ahmedabad. Yoga, an ancient Indian discipline focused on health and well-being, will now be evaluated competitively through Yogasana performances.

Judges will award points based on body movement, posture, balance, facial direction, muscle flexibility, stability and overall execution of the asanas. The championship will run for five days. There will be no live telecast of the event, although a documentary based on the competition will later be released.

Athletes From Pakistan Among Three Nations Missing

A total of 529 athletes from 60 countries will participate in this unique championship, including 114 competitors from India. Athletes from countries such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, Oman, Japan, Kenya and Mauritius are travelling to India for the event.

The competition will feature 12 events across six age-based categories. Male and female participants ranging from 10 to 55 years of age will compete. Winners in artistic and rhythmic Yogasana categories will be decided by a panel of nine judges through a point-based system.

Athletes from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan will not participate in the tournament. Selection trials were conducted for Indian competitors, who are currently training at the sports complex.
