Farmers Fear Heavy Losses Due To Unseasonal Rains

Several parts of Gujarat witnessed unseasonal rains today. While these rains have given respite to the people from heat, untoward incidents have also taken place. A farmer died in Viramgam due to being struck by lightning. The deceased’s family members and people from his village are mourning his death. As it was raining, farmer Mangaji Thakor was in his field, covering the crops with tarpaulin, when suddenly he was struck by lightning, causing his death. The farmer’s body has been shifted to the hospital for post-mortem, after which it will be handed over to his family.

The Meteorological Department had predicted unseasonal rains for three days. On Sunday (May 4), from early morning onwards, there was a shift in the weather in several areas. Unseasonal rains were reported in Ahmedabad, Banaskantha, Gandhinagar, Sabarkantha, Mehsana, and Surendranagar. This situation has caused tension for the farmers, as they fear heavy losses in the summer crop. Likewise the mango crop will also be affected.

Several places in Ahmedabad experienced rain early in the morning on Sunday. Areas including Sindhu Bhavan road, Vadaj, Nirnaynagar, Dudheshwar, Usmanpura, and Income Tax experienced drizzling. On the other hand, early in the  morning, Aravalli, Malpur, Modasa, Meghraj, and Bhiloda received rainfall with thunder and wind. Mehsana witnessed rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning. Vadnagar also witnessed coolness in the weather. Mahisagar witnessed rainy weather since early morning. Rainfall occurred in the rural areas, including Khanpur, which has left the farmers in tension of their crops.

Whereas, in Visnagar, the power supply was disrupted due to heavy winds. Heavy sparks were caused due to short circuit in some places. Banaskantha witnessed heavy winds accompanied with rainfall. Meanwhile, hailstorm was reported in Palanpur, Vadgam, along with wind. There was a sudden change in the weather with strong winds blowing in Deesa, Lakhani, and Dantiwada areas. As the millet crop (bajra) has been harvested recently, there is a fear of damage due to the unseasonal rains. On the other hand, water was filled up to the knees in Palanpur.
