Surat : Kite String Kills 4 , Father-Mother And Daughter Fell From Bridge; Young Man Died As String Slit Neck
Surat : The festival of Uttarayan has brought mourning to many families. On January 14, 4 people lost their lives in separate accidents due to kite strings in Surat. In Surat, a family, a husband, wife and daughter died after falling off a bridge. Whereas a young man died after a string got stuck around his neck.
A shocking incident took place on the bridge connecting Wade Road and Adajan in Surat in the evening. 35-year-old Rehan was returning from Subhash Garden with his wife and 7-year-old daughter Ayesha. Rehan lost his balance when the kite string suddenly fell on the bridge. The three members of the bike collided with the divider and fell off the bridge. In this horrific accident, Rehan and innocent Ayesha died on the spot. His wife Rehan fell on the rickshaw parked below and suffered serious injuries and died during treatment in the hospital.
There was also a kite string incident in Vesu area of Surat. A 23-year-old youth was passing by on his moped when a kite string got stuck in his neck in Lal Ghoda area. The youth died tragically on the spot due to serious injuries and excessive bleeding. Emergency services across Gujarat faced a major surge in distress calls on the day of Uttarayan–14 January, with official data from 108 EMRI services revealing a sharp rise in human injuries, particularly trauma cases linked to kite flying and rooftop activities, alongside a dramatic increase in bird injuries.
Physical assault cases saw the steepest rise at 284%, while falls from heights or skidding—often linked to rooftop kite flying—rose by 92%. Crush injuries, largely attributed to kite string-related wounds, surged by over 1,000%. Vehicular trauma cases also climbed sharply, increasing by nearly 119%, with Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara emerging as major hotspots. Ahmedabad reported the highest number of non-vehicular trauma cases at 350, followed by Surat (153) and Vadodara (92).
Animal and bird emergencies also formed a significant part of the day’s toll. Data shows that 1,205 animal and bird-related emergency calls were received statewide, a 16.36% increase over normal days.While animal injury cases declined by nearly 25%, bird-related emergencies surged by an alarming 1,668%, underscoring the risk posed by kite strings.
