
Delhi: Delhi High court has granted bail to Olympic wrestler Shshil Kumar in a murder case. Kumar was released after providing a Rs 50,000 bond and two sureties of the same amount.
Justice Sanjiv Narula, granted bail to Kumar, who is a main accused in the death of a junior wrestler, 23-year-old Sagar Dhankar, in May 2021. The two-time Olympic medallist was charged with murder, along with rioting, unlawful assembly and criminal conspiracy following Dhankar succumbing to injuries when he was attacked by Kumar and other people.
Dhankar was attacked by Sushil Kumar and other people at parking of Chhatrasal Stadium of New Delhi on May 4, 2021. Later he died of the injuries. Scuffle was occured following property dispute. In the case Delhi police filed 170 page chargesheet citing Kumar as main accused and mentioning tension over Dhankar’s reluctance to vacate the flat and rumours that kumar feared him.
Kumar was arrested from Mundka in western Delhi. Before his arrest Kumar was on the run for over two weeks. Kumar has been in judicial custody since June 2, 2021. The conflict began over a flat in Model Town, owned by Kumar, where Dhankar had previously lived. A dispute over rent escalated when Dhankar allegedly abused Kumar, leading to the fatal brawl outside of Chhatrasal Stadium. Dhankar later died.
Sushil Kumar, the key accused in the Sagar Dhankar murder case, has been granted interim bail multiple times. In March 2023, Rohini Court granted him four days of bail on humanitarian grounds to perform his father’s last rites.
The court allowed his release from March 6-9, 2023 on a Rs 1 lakh bond with two sureties. By the time, he was out on bail again from July 23-30, 2023, during which he underwent a knee operation. Again Kumar surrendered in Delhi’s Tihar Jail again in August 2023.
