Mega Demolition in Bapunagar After Chandola, Bulldozers Clear Over 400 Illegal Structures

Ahmedabad: While the bulldozer action against illegal encroachments at Ahmedabad’s Chandola Lake has not yet subsided, authorities have launched a large-scale demolition drive in Bapunagar, creating significant impact. On Thursday (May 29), starting from morning, bulldozers demolished over 400 temporary and permanent houses and shops in the Akbarnagar area.

AMC Had Issued Prior Notice

According to information received from Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), residents of this area had been previously issued warnings to vacate illegal constructions. Among these were many people who had been allocated houses in government settlements in the Vatva area, yet several of them had returned to live here again.

Tight Police Security Arrangements Made

A major operation was launched by authorities from morning itself, involving five JCB machines, eight Hitachi machines, and several trucks. Following the authorities’ action, people hurriedly began removing tin sheets and belongings from their constructions. However, tight police security arrangements were also put in place to prevent any untoward incidents.

Akbarnagar Was Hub of Anti-social Elements: Corporator

Regarding this demolition drive, BJP corporator Prakash Gurjar from Bapunagar area said that this area, known as Akbarnagar slums, comes under AMC ownership. Encroachments had been made here for years. After conducting surveys and providing houses to people in government settlements, these people had again come here and started living in makeshift shelters. Anti-social elements who had recently threatened police with swords and sticks in Rakhiyal were also residing here.
