How Much Tax Did Gujarat Contribute in 2024-25, and How Much Refund Was Issued?

Ahmedabad: Taxpayers in Gujarat contributed a staggering ₹1.28 lakh crore in income tax during the financial year 2024-25, crossing the ₹1 lakh crore mark in gross income tax collections for the first time. A remarkable increase was observed particularly in collections from individual taxpayers, alongside corporates. Notably, Gujarat’s net collection surpassed ₹1.05 lakh crore after refunds, solidifying the state’s position among India’s top contributors, alongside Maharashtra, Delhi, and Tamil Nadu.

₹22,935 Crore Refunded to Gujarat Taxpayers

Compared to the previous year, Gujarat recorded a 14.37% rise in total income tax collections. Taxpayers in the state received refunds amounting to ₹22,935 crore. Even after issuing these refunds, Gujarat’s net income tax collections exceeded ₹1 lakh crore for the first time. Nationally, India’s gross income tax collections stood at ₹27.02 lakh crore, reflecting a 15.59% increase over the previous fiscal year. From the gross amount, the Income Tax Department refunded ₹2.85 lakh crore to corporate entities and ₹1.90 lakh crore to individual taxpayers, resulting in a total refund payout of ₹4.76 lakh crore. Consequently, the net income tax revenue reached ₹22.26 lakh crore, showing a 13.57% rise from the previous year.

Steady Growth in Gujarat’s Taxpayer Base

Income tax receipts from individuals amounted to ₹11.82 crore compared to ₹9.86 crore from corporates, highlighting a shift in contribution patterns. Recent data also indicates a continuous increase in the number of taxpayers in Gujarat, a trend that mirrors the state’s robust economic growth. As of now, Gujarat has registered 1,34,25,401 taxpayers. Nationwide, between April 1, 2024, and January 31, 2025, the number of income tax return filers rose by 6.9%, surpassing a total of 9 crore filings, according to the Income Tax e-filing portal.
