Heavy Rains Trigger Landslide Near Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Jammu; Rescue Teams Deployed

Jammu: Heavy rains pounding Jammu and Kashmir have triggered a landslide at Inderprastha Bhojnalaya in Adhkwari, near the revered Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Reasi district, on Tuesday. Several people are feared injured in the incident.

Authorities rushed to the spot and launched immediate rescue efforts. “Rescue operations are underway along with required manpower and machinery,” the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board confirmed.

The region has been reeling from relentless downpours over the past 24 hours, bringing daily life to a standstill. Earlier, a cloudburst in Kahar village of Doda district set off flash floods, leaving several people feared dead, according to reports.

Rivers across the Jammu region, including the Chenab, Ravi, and Tawi, are swelling dangerously close to the red mark. The rains have also caused extensive damage to property in the higher reaches of Kishtwar and Rajouri, demolishing nearly a dozen houses and a cowshed.

In Ramban district, incidents of shooting stones were reported at Chanderkote, Kela Morh, and Battery Cheshma. Meanwhile, parts of the Padder road near Traith Nallah in Kishtwar were washed away, and landslides forced the closure of the Ramnagar-Udhampur road in Udhampur and the Jangalwar-Thathri stretch in Doda, PTI reported.

The India Meteorological Department revealed that Kathua recorded the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours, at 155.6 mm, followed by 99.8 mm in Bhaderwah (Doda), 81.5 mm in Jammu, and 68.8 mm in Katra.

The Indian Army has also joined ongoing rescue operations to help affected residents. Meanwhile, heavy rains have been reported across the higher reaches of Kashmir as well, heightening concerns of more weather-related disruptions in the region.
