Ahmedabad: A series of earthquakes struck Gujarat’s Rajkot district on Friday morning, triggering panic among residents as tremors were felt repeatedly across several areas. Jetpur, Dhoraji, Upleta and nearby regions reported multiple jolts, prompting local authorities to declare holidays in several schools as a precaution.
Tremors Continue Since Early Morning
According to data from the Institute of Seismological Research, Rajkot experienced 11 earthquakes between early morning and noon. The strongest tremor was recorded at 6:19 am, measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale. Minor quakes continued for nearly an hour after the first major jolt, with tremors reported until around 11:45 am on 9 January. In total, 11 shocks were recorded within a span of six hours, from 6 am to 12 pm.
Another Quake Recorded Last Night; Schools Closed as Precaution
The epicentre was located 27 to 30 kilometres east-northeast of Upleta, at an estimated depth of 6.1 to 13.6 kilometres. On Thursday night as well, a 3.3-magnitude earthquake was reported at 8:43 pm. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported so far.
