Gujarat’s Education Crisis:  525 Govt Schools Shut in 8 Years

Ahmedabad: While the slogan “Educated Gujarat, Literate Gujarat” is being promoted, the reality paints a grim picture of government education in the state. The education department itself is openly encouraging private schooling, leading to a rapid decline in government schools. Over the last eight years, 525 government schools have been shut down, while private institutions are flourishing.

Schools Closed, More on the Chopping Block

A report reveals that Gujarat has closed 525 government schools in eight years, with plans to shut down 5,912 more due to low student enrollment. This highlights the deteriorating state of education in Gujarat.

Parents Opt for Private Schools Despite High Fees

Lack of facilities and quality education in government schools has forced parents to turn to private institutions, despite exorbitant fees and donations. Meanwhile, government schools even those with affordable fees remain empty. Many lack teachers, especially in remote and tribal areas. Shockingly, 1,600 schools in Gujarat operate with just one teacher handling all grades.

Teacher Shortage & Infrastructure Crisis

Despite the crisis, the education department has delayed teacher recruitment. There’s also a severe shortage of classrooms 40,000 are needed statewide, with 1,456 schools having just one classroom. Declining student numbers have made it easier for authorities to shut down schools.

Government Pushes Private Education

The education department actively promotes private schooling, leading to a surge in private institutions. A parliamentary report shows private schools increased from 12,502 (2015) to 13,490 (2023-24), while government schools dropped from 35,122 to 34,597.

As Gujarat boasts about educational progress, the reality is stark government schools are closing, while private schools multiply unchecked.
