Ahmedabad — Heavy rainfall battered Ahmedabad today, flooding roads and disrupting daily life across multiple city areas, Gujarat Samachar reported. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecasted intense showers, and the city saw significant downpours in neighborhoods like Sarkhej, Makarba, Prahladnagar, Shyamal, Satellite, Iscon, Jodhpur Char Rasta, S.G. Highway, and Gota. The deluge caused waterlogging on major roads, stranding commuters and slowing traffic to a crawl.
The relentless rain has also impacted Gujarat’s rivers, with rising water levels prompting authorities to release water from the Dharoi Dam into the Sabarmati River. This measure, driven by heavy rainfall in upstream areas and neighboring Rajasthan, has raised concerns for low-lying regions near the river. Residents in these areas have been advised to remain vigilant as flood-like conditions threaten.
Statewide, Gujarat has recorded 80% of its seasonal rainfall, averaging 27.50 inches, according to Gujarat Samachar. Thirty-seven talukas have reported over 40 inches of rain, boosting water levels in 207 reservoirs to an average of 78.82% capacity. Fifty-nine reservoirs are now at full capacity, while 78 remain on high alert due to the risk of overflow.
The IMD issued a red alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall today in Sabarkantha, Navsari, Valsad, Daman, and Dadra Nagar Haveli, signaling potential for further disruptions. An orange alert was also issued for Aravalli, Mahisagar, Dang, Tapi, Junagadh, and Kutch, indicating continued severe weather. The heavy rains have already caused significant challenges, with flooded roads hampering movement and daily activities across Ahmedabad and other parts of Gujarat.
As the state braces for more rainfall, authorities are monitoring reservoir levels and river systems closely, urging residents to stay cautious. The ongoing monsoon has brought both relief and challenges, with waterlogged streets and rising rivers underscoring the impact of this season’s intense weather.
