Gujarat University Waives Full Fees For Injured Medical Students In Ahmedabad Plane Crash

Ahmedabad: Following the devastating plane crash on June 12 that claimed the lives of 241 passengers as well as four medical students from BJ Medical College, Gujarat University has announced a full waiver of academic fees for the 12 students who were injured in the tragedy.

The crash occurred when an Air India aircraft lost control and crashed into the hostel building of BJ Medical College. Four MBBS students tragically died on-site, while 12 others, comprising 10 MBBS students, one final-year physiotherapy student, and one resident doctor, suffered varying degrees of injury.

In the aftermath, the Junior Doctors’ Association of college submitted a formal request to the university, urging financial support for the injured. Responding to this plea, and following the direction of the state government and the intervention of Health Minister Rishikesh Patel, Gujarat University approved the complete waiver of academic fees for the affected students.

According to a letter sent by the university to the dean of BJ Medical College, the fee waiver was granted as a gesture of compassion. The affected students include eight second-year and two first-year MBBS students, alongside the physiotherapy and resident doctor students.

Additionally, the college has initiated efforts to refund fees paid by the four students who lost their lives, acknowledging the need to support their grieving families. As BJ Medical College is a government institution, the state has also assured that the annual tuition fees collected from the deceased students will be reimbursed.

University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Nirja Gupta emphasized that the decision reflects the university’s commitment to standing in solidarity with students during moments of profound loss and distress.
