“Just Bring Her Home”: Gujarat Family Waits 15 Days After Daughter’s Murder in Canada

Toronto: For the past 15 days, a family in Gujarat has been living with unbearable grief and one painful wait to bring their daughter home from Canada.

Vidhi Meghani, a young student from Anand district, had moved to Canada with dreams of building a better future through education and hard work. Like thousands of Indian students studying abroad, she balanced studies with part-time work and hoped to make a life for herself overseas.

But those dreams were shattered after the 22-year-old was allegedly stabbed to death in Canada’s Niagara region earlier this month.

According to reports, Vidhi had gone missing on May 15. Days later, Canadian authorities recovered her body near the US border and confirmed that she had been murdered. Police have registered a case and the investigation is still underway.

Back in Gujarat, her family says the pain has only grown with every passing day. Nearly two weeks after her death, her mortal remains are yet to reach India. Her relatives have alleged delays in the repatriation process and are pleading with authorities to help bring her home soon so they can perform her last rites.

“What we want now is simple just bring her back,” a grieving family member reportedly said.

The incident has once again sparked concern over the safety of Indian students abroad, particularly in Canada, where several attacks involving international students have surfaced in recent years. For many parents, stories like Vidhi’s turn the dream of studying overseas into a nightmare no family ever imagines.

While Canadian police continue their investigation, one family in Gujarat continues to wait not for answers anymore, but for a final goodbye.
