Ahmedabad: The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Gujarat is progressing rapidly, with over 2.17 crore citizens mapped and 3.9 crore enumeration forms distributed so far, according to data released by the office of the state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Hareet Shukla on Tuesday.
Statewide Exercise to Update Voter Rolls
The enumeration phase, which began on November 4, will continue till December 4, covering nearly five crore registered voters across the state. More than 50,000 booth-level officers (BLOs) are currently engaged in the door-to-door verification and distribution of pre-filled forms as part of the revision exercise.
“At present, 50,963 BLOs are diligently carrying out their duties across all districts,” the CEO’s office said in a release. Gujarat currently has 5.08 crore registered voters, of which mapping for over 2.17 crore citizens has already been completed.
Ensuring Accuracy and Inclusion
The SIR campaign, guided by the Election Commission of India (ECI), aims to ensure that all eligible citizens are included in the updated electoral rolls while removing ineligible names to maintain accuracy and transparency. Under CEO Shukla’s supervision, officials including District Election Officers and Voter Registration Officers are coordinating efforts across districts for smooth implementation.
BLOs are considered the backbone of the ongoing process. They are responsible for distributing enumeration forms, verifying voter details, assisting citizens in linking family members’ names, and guiding new voters through the registration process. Each BLO will visit households in their assigned area at least three times to ensure no eligible voter is left out.
Timeline for Revision Process
Following the enumeration phase, draft electoral rolls will be published on December 9. Citizens can then file claims and objections until January 8, 2026. Verification and hearings will take place between December 9 and January 31, and the final voter list for Gujarat will be published on February 7, 2026.
The SIR is part of a nationwide voter roll revision drive launched by the ECI across 12 states and Union Territories to enhance transparency, inclusion, and voter accuracy ahead of the next election cycle.
