Gujarat Sees Strong Voter Turnout, Peaceful Polling In Gram Panchayat Elections

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat State Election Commission held elections today (June 22) for 8,326 gram panchayats. This election marks the first gram panchayat vote in the state since the Gujarat government implemented 27% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in local self-governing bodies. It covered general, mid-term, by-elections, and reorganization-related polls.
Voting took place from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with approximately 81 lakh voters casting their ballots. The results are scheduled to be announced on June 25. A total of 81 lakh rural voters participated, using ballot papers to select their local representatives.
Polling was conducted in 3,541 gram panchayats and went largely smoothly across the state despite intermittent rainfall. Apart from a few minor incidents, the process remained peaceful, with an estimated average voter turnout exceeding 70%.
Voters from all walks of life, women, the elderly, and persons with disabilities, turned out in large numbers, showing strong enthusiasm despite the weather. Their active participation reflected a deep commitment to democratic values.
Security personnel, including police and home guards, played a vital role in assisting elderly, disabled, and physically challenged voters, ensuring they could reach polling stations and vote with ease. Their efforts contributed to a smooth and inclusive voting experience for all.
