
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court has granted a one-month extension to the interim bail of Asaram, a self-styled godman convicted in two rape cases and currently serving a life sentence in Jodhpur jail. His bail, initially set to expire on July 7, has now been extended for the final time, requiring him to surrender by August.

Asaram’s Three-Month Bail for Medical Treatment
On January 7, the Supreme Court granted Asaram interim bail until March 31 to seek medical treatment. The court directed him to approach the Gujarat High Court for any further extensions. On March 28, the Gujarat High Court extended his interim bail for three months, allowing him to continue treatment.
Bail Extended Until July 7
Asaram’s three-month bail was originally set to end on June 30, but following a plea from his legal team, it was extended to July 7. On Thursday, the Gujarat High Court bench reviewed the case again to consider a further extension.

Final Bail Extension Granted
During the hearing, Asaram’s lawyer presented a certificate from the National Legal Services Authority, citing his advanced age and ongoing health issues, and requested a three-month bail extension. However, the Gujarat High Court bench granted only a one-month extension, emphasizing that this would be the final extension for Asaram’s bail.

Life Imprisonment in Two Rape Cases
Asaram has been serving a life sentence since 2013 for raping a minor at his ashram in Rajasthan. Additionally, in January 2023, a Gandhinagar court sentenced him to life imprisonment in a separate rape case, further solidifying his conviction.
