Heatwave Alters School Schedules Across Gujarat: Ahmedabad Complies, Rajkot Defies, Surat Stays on Track
Ahmedabad mandates noon shutdown for schools due to extreme heat; Rajkot schools flout orders amid exams, while Surat reports full compliance.

Ahmedabad: As Gujarat grapples with a scorching heatwave, authorities are taking steps to safeguard students from soaring temperatures, with cities like Ahmedabad and Rajkot recording highs above 42°C.
In Ahmedabad, District Education Officer (DEO) Rohit Chaudhary has instructed all schools to wrap up academic activities by 12 PM. The directive, in line with the state education department’s recent circular, aims to prevent heat-related health risks among children. Schools failing to comply will face strict action, with inspection teams set to begin visits from Friday.
Despite higher temperatures in Rajkot, some private schools there have been found violating the revised schedule. According to Media Report, institutions like G.D. Dholakiya and Parimal Vidyavihar continued classes until 1 PM, disregarding the April 4 circular that mandated school hours be limited to 7 AM–11 AM starting April 8, under the Gujarat Heatwave Action Plan 2025.

Parents voiced serious concerns over their children’s exposure to the intense heat. In response, Dholakiya School principal Narendra Meva confirmed the delayed dismissal, citing ongoing examinations. He assured that from next week, classes would end by 11 AM. Meva also outlined measures taken to mitigate the heat, including multiple fans per classroom, sun-blocking window coverings, and the availability of glucose and ORS kits on each floor.
Meanwhile, Surat has shown full compliance with state directives. While Gujarat Board schools have already closed for the 2024–25 academic year, CBSE-affiliated institutions remain open but are releasing students by 12:30 PM. According to the education department, no complaints have been received from Surat, where schools are reportedly following heatwave safety protocols, including providing water and shaded rest areas for students.
