Gujarat Government Waives Up To 80% of Stamp Duty On Residential Property Transfers

Ahmedabad: In a move aimed at easing the financial burden on lower and middle-class families, the Gujarat government has announced a major relaxation in stamp duty payments for housing societies. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has approved a decision allowing up to 80% waiver on stamp duty charges for property transfers carried out through allotment letters and share certificates.

Under this new policy, societies, associations, and non-trading corporations will now be required to pay only 20% of the total stamp duty that was previously applicable on such transactions.

The State Revenue Department has stated that this reform will significantly reduce the financial pressure on families involved in property transitions, especially within cooperative housing structures. The new provision ensures that, instead of paying the full stamp duty and additional penalties, only 20% of the original duty (plus applicable penalties) will now be collected.

Importantly, this benefit applies solely to changes made through allotment letters or share certificates within housing societies, associations, and non-trading entities. It does not apply to other forms of property transactions.

This move is expected to bring substantial relief to homeowners in cooperative societies, particularly when regularizing or transferring property rights. The updated notification with specific provisions is set to be issued soon by the government.
