Gujarat DGP Vikas Sahay To Retire Today, Farewell Preparations In Full Swing

Gandhinagar: Today marks the end of an era in Gujarat’s police force as Director General of Police (DGP) Vikas Sahay is set to retire from service today. After months of speculation about a possible service extension, it now appears certain that Sahay will step down, with the state police department already making arrangements for his farewell ceremony.

Sahay, one of Gujarat’s most senior IPS officers, was rumored to be in line for a three-month extension. A 1989-batch IPS officer of the Gujarat cadre, Sahay was appointed as the in-charge DGP on 31 January 2023, and was later appointed as the regular DGP. His previous charges include serving as SP, Anand in 1999, SP, Ahmedabad Rural in 2001, DCP in Ahmedabad in 2002, as DCP in 2004 and Addl CP in 2005 in Ahmedabad’s traffic department.

Thereafter, he served as Addl CP and JCP in Surat City in 2007. He also served as the Deputy Director General from 2010 to 2016, and then as Director General until 2020 at the Raksha Shakti University. However, with retirement formalities underway and no official extension announced, insiders confirm that he will formally retire from the role today, June 30, 2025.

As Sahay bows out, attention now turns to his successor. Among the top contenders is Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G.S. Malik, a 1993-batch IPS officer with a distinguished service record, including key roles in the Border Security Force and strong leadership during major public events in Ahmedabad.

Though names like Dr. K.L.N. Rao are also being discussed based on seniority, Malik’s close working relationship with the current administration could give him the edge. A final decision is expected soon, with the state government having already sent a shortlist of five officers to the Centre.

For now, all eyes remain on Gandhinagar, where the farewell for DGP Vikas Sahay symbolizes both a closing chapter and the beginning of a new leadership era in Gujarat Police.
