Gujarat Bridge Collapse Kills 9: PM Modi Announces ₹2 Lakh, CM Patel ₹4 Lakh Compensation For Victims’ Families

Vadodara: A devastating incident on unfolded Wednesday morning when a section of the Gambhira Bridge, which connects Vadodara and Anand districts in Gujarat, collapsed, claiming the lives of nine people after four vehicles plunged into the Mahisagar river. Rescue teams are still at work at the site, where at least eight individuals have been pulled out alive.

The bridge, reportedly over four decades old, gave way suddenly, sparking outrage and grief across the region. Locals have criticized officials for ignoring the deteriorating condition of the structure, raising concerns of long-standing negligence.

In response to the disaster, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and announced financial assistance for the victims. “The loss of lives due to the collapse of a bridge in Vadodara district, Gujarat, is deeply saddening. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon,” the Prime Minister’s Office posted on social media platform X.

He further stated that the families of those who died would receive an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF), while those injured would be given ₹50,000.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also addressed the tragedy, expressing sorrow and initiating a formal investigation. “The tragedy caused by the collapse of one of the 23 spans of the Gambhira Bridge connecting Anand and Vadodara is tragic. I pray for the peace of the souls of those who lost their lives in the tragedy,” he posted on X.

The state government has announced ₹4 lakh in compensation for the kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. CM Patel also emphasized the need for swift medical care for the survivors.
