Gujarat Bets Rs 500 Crore On Satellite manufacturing, Ryes New Rocket launch Site On Arabian Sea Coast

Ahmedabad: Gujarat is moving fast to carve out a place for itself in India’s space economy. The state government has identified a site near Kodinar in Gir Somnath district tucked between Diu and the Arabian Sea coastline as a potential satellite launch centre, Science and Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia told the Assembly.

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) assessed the location and found it suitable for launch infrastructure. If it gets off the ground, the facility would function along the lines of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota India’s only operational spaceport right now.

Separately, a private firm has committed roughly Rs 500 crore to set up a small satellite manufacturing unit at the Gujarat Space Park near Sanand, which spans about 100 acres. Officials say the plant will handle the full satellite lifecycle design, engineering, assembly, and testing which would make it India’s first end-to-end private satellite manufacturing facility.

The push follows Gujarat’s Space Technology Policy, announced in April 2025, making it the first Indian state to roll out a dedicated space policy. The policy is aimed at drawing private investment into satellite research, manufacturing, and related technologies.

Global demand for satellites driven by internet, communications, and Earth observation services has been climbing steadily, and India’s domestic launch capacity has struggled to keep pace. A second launchpad on the west coast, combined with expanded manufacturing, could help address that gap. No construction timeline for the Kodinar launch site has been announced yet.
