Gujarat allocates Rs 2,609 crore to resurface 1,258 rural roads across all districts

Gandhinagar: — Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has cleared a Rs 2,609 crore package to upgrade rural connectivity by resurfacing key panchayat-managed roads statewide, aiming to ensure durable, all-weather access for villages and small settlements, according to an official release cited by ANI. The decision aligns with a people-centric approach to strengthen last-mile transport links and improve mobility between interior areas and city corridors across districts.
Under the plan, resurfacing and allied works will cover 1,258 roads spanning a total of 4,196 km across North Gujarat, South Gujarat, and Saurashtra, the government stated. The region-wise distribution includes 487 roads over 1,609 km in North Gujarat, 499 roads over 1,528 km in South Gujarat, and 272 roads over 1,059 km in Saurashtra, reflecting a broad push to reinforce village connectivity across the state.

Officials said the funding decision follows sustained representations from elected members, rural communities, and local leaders seeking robust, year-round road infrastructure in their areas. Once completed, the resurfacing is expected to significantly bolster the rural network, making intra-village travel and city-bound commutes smoother and more reliable for smaller habitations.
In a related development, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in the presence of CM Bhupendra Patel and state Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, e-inaugurated security-focused projects from Gandhinagar, including new Gujarat Police Housing infrastructure. The Gujarat Police Housing initiative added residential and non-residential buildings at a cost of Rs 217 crore, which were inaugurated digitally during the event, officials noted.
