Earthquake in Kutch: 4.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Khawda; 3 Tremors Felt In 24 Hours

Kutch: The Kutch district of Gujarat experienced a series of earthquakes over 24 hours, with the strongest a magnitude 4.1 tremor striking near Khawda in the early hours of Saturday, jolting residents from their sleep.

According to the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR), Gandhinagar, an earthquake measuring 4.1 in magnitude was recorded at 01:22 hours on Saturday. The epicenter was located 55 kilometers north-northeast (NNE) of Khawda in Kutch, at a depth of 11.6 kilometers. The significant intensity of the quake resulted in strong tremors being felt across Khawda and a large surrounding area. Fortunately, no reports of casualties or major damage have been received so far.

This was the third tremor recorded in the district within a 24-hour period. Two milder quakes had been reported on Friday, January 16:

  • Near Bhachau: A magnitude 2.7 earthquake was recorded at 13:50 hours on Friday, 21 kilometers north-northeast (NNE) of Bhachau. This quake originated at a depth of 23.9 kilometers.
  • Near Rapar: Earlier on Friday, a magnitude 2.5 earthquake was recorded at 05:47 hours, 19 kilometers west-northwest (WNW) of Rapar, at a depth of 11.1 kilometers.

The sequence of tremors in a single day, particularly the 4.1 magnitude quake, has caused concern among local residents. Kutch is located in Seismic Zone-5, the region of highest seismic activity in India, making it prone to frequent earthquakes.
