Surat: While the Indian Army’s Operation Sindoor has been a source of national pride since its launch on the night of May 7-8, a tribute built in its name has sparked local controversy in Surat. A newly constructed traffic circle featuring a statue of army personnel and a fighter jet, themed after Operation Sindoor, has gone viral on social media, but now faces scrutiny for allegedly being built without municipal approval.
The controversy deepened when a letter dated 3 June from Surat MP Mukesh Dalal surfaced. In the letter, Dalal had requested the construction of a circle inspired by Operation Sindoor in the Adajan-Rander area. However, the city already has such a circle, which was constructed without official sanction, as per the reports. The incident has ignited debate across local and online platforms.
Reports suggest that the Surat Municipal Corporation has taken note of the unauthorized construction and has issued a notice to the organization responsible. The structure, located near the Haveli area on Hazira Road, includes cut-outs of soldiers, a fighter jet replica, and prominently features the Operation Sindoor name.

The MP’s letter had emphasized that such a circle could inspire patriotism and awareness about military preparedness among citizens and youth by showcasing indigenous weaponry. Ironically, the enthusiasm for this cause seems to have bypassed legal procedures, as locals claim the circle was built without any municipal clearance.
As the issue gains traction, many are now speculating whether some individuals are trying to capitalize on the success of Operation Sindoor for personal recognition. The situation underscores a broader concern: while patriotic sentiment runs high, it must still operate within the bounds of civic regulations.
