Congress MLA Backs Arrested AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava, Announces ‘Nyay Yatra’ Protest

Ahmedabad: Despite ongoing tensions between the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) at the national level, two tribal leaders from rival parties in Gujarat have set aside their political differences to stand united. Congress MLA Anant Patel has voiced strong support for AAP legislator Chaitar Vasava, who was arrested on Saturday following a reported altercation with BJP leader Sanjay Vasava at a taluka panchayat office in Dediapada, Narmada district. Patel condemned the arrest, alleging it was politically motivated and demanded the immediate release of his fellow tribal representative.
In a video shared on social media Monday, Patel, who represents Vansda in South Gujarat, praised Vasava’s activism, saying, “Chaitar Vasava has always stood up for the rights of tribal communities, often challenging state authorities to ensure justice.” He further alleged that the arrest was carried out illegally and framed as part of a broader effort by the ruling BJP to suppress dissent.
Just days before the arrest, both legislators had jointly led a protest against the Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (DGVCL), accusing the utility of denying jobs to qualified tribal and OBC youth. Accusing the BJP of weaponizing law enforcement, Patel declared plans for a protest march dubbed the “Nyay Yatra” to rally public support. “We will gherao the Dediapada police station and demand justice,” he said. “This is not about party lines — it’s about standing with a tribal leader who has been wronged.”
The Congress MLA has also called for a meeting of tribal leaders from South and Central Gujarat to unify efforts. “We are not supporting an AAP MLA, we are supporting a tribal MLA,” he told The Indian Express. “The tribal community has never bowed before injustice and never will.” Meanwhile, AAP leaders have welcomed Patel’s backing.
State General Secretary Manoj Sorathiya confirmed that Vasava’s bail application will be filed Tuesday in Rajpipla court and expressed concern that the state intends to prolong the legislator’s detention. “We’re reaching out to tribal organisations across Gujarat for solidarity,” Sorathiya said. This show of unity comes even as top leaders of both Congress and AAP continue to trade barbs.
