Late at night on Thursday (June 5), a fatal accident took place on Rajkot-Bhavnagar highway, near Mahika village. A Bolero car broke the divider on the side of the road and plunged 10 feet down into a canal. The accident resulted in the deaths of Rajkot Roads and Buildings Department’s Mechanical Executive Engineer, and a driver, who were in the car.
The accident occurred around 11 PM at night. The Bolero car broke the divider which was present on the side of the road, and plunged down into a canal. A local person informed the police about the accident today morning (June 6). The police reached the spot and have initiated investigations.

Rajkot R&B Department’s Mechanical Executive Engineer Champak Patel, and Javed Padhiyar who worked as a driver at Rajkot Bahumali Bhavan, died on the spot due to the accident. Patel served as a mechanical executive engineer in the R&B Department for the past 3 years, whereas Padhiyar was a contract based driver at Rajkot Bahumali Bhavan for the past 15 years.
Apparently, Patel had visited a site in Bhavnagar due to some work, and was returning to Rajkot, when the accident took place. Primary findings reveal that the driver lost control of the car, due to which it broke the side divider and fell down into the canal. Both the deceased’s bodies have been sent for post-mortem at the Rajkot Civil Hospital.
The state is witnessing rising number of highway and road accidents lately. Just yesterday, on June 5, an accident took place in Anjar, where a Creta car collided with 2 bikes, resulting in the on the spot deaths of two people; a girl got severely injured in the accident.
On the other hand, a few days ago, on Ahmedabad-Indore highway, a speeding car hit a biker and eventually rammed into a parked truck. The accident took one life, whereas three other people were injured. Such cases spark concerns about driving and safety on highways and roads.
