AMC To Undertake Major Redevelopment And Beautification Of Chandola Lake Following The Demolition Drive

Ahmedabad: In a major urban development move, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) cleared nearly 1.5 lakh square meters of government land in the Chandola Lake area on April 29 and 30. Approximately 4,000 illegal structures, including temporary and permanent homes and huts, were demolished as part of the effort to remove encroachments from the vicinity of the lake. Spread over nearly 1,200 acres in the eastern parts of the city, particularly in Danilimda and Isanpur, the lake is now the focus of a large-scale redevelopment initiative.
This lake, the second-largest after Kankaria in Ahmedabad, has been earmarked for transformation with an investment of ₹27.53 crore. The redevelopment will unfold in seven phases, with work on the first phase already in progress. Initial efforts include deepening the lake, filling the surrounding area, developing walkways, and reviving the Khambhati well. The stretch along the road from Danilimda to Narol is the primary focus of the initial phase.
Officials confirmed that Chandola Lake will be replenished with water from the Narmada canal, which runs past Ghodasar. Additionally, treated wastewater from a newly planned sewage treatment plant (STP) will be discharged into the lake to ensure a year-round water presence.
Post-redevelopment, Chandola Lake is expected to become a major attraction for locals and visitors alike. The lake’s surroundings will be enhanced with features like a drainage system, walkways, upper and lower promenades, an amphitheater, a jungle gym, party plots, bridal and groom rooms, and event sheds. A wall will also be constructed around the entire lake perimeter for protection.
The project promises to transform the area’s image and livability, especially for nearby neighborhoods such as Shah Alam, Vatva, Isanpur, and Ghodasar. AMC officials, along with private agencies, have begun surveying the site, determining boundaries, and planning detailed mapping of the cleared land for further phases of development.
