AMC Launches Major Demolition Drive At Isanpur Lake; Over 20 JCBs Deployed After Chandola Operation

Ahmedabad: Following the Chandola Lake clearance, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has initiated the city’s second-largest demolition operation at Isanpur Lake in the eastern part of the city. The drive to remove illegal encroachments that have accumulated over several years began Monday morning, November 24. Strict police arrangements have been deployed to prevent any untoward incidents during the operation.
Removing Over 1,000 Encroachments
According to available information, similar to Chandola Lake, more than 1,000 people have illegally encroached upon Isanpur Lake premises. AMC has now undertaken the task of clearing these unauthorized structures at Isanpur following the Chandola operation. Approximately 500 municipal corporation employees and laborers have been assigned to the work. Around 20 JCB machines have been brought in for the demolition, supported by heavy police deployment.
Four Decades of Encroachment
According to reports, as the government and AMC undertake lake beautification projects, they must also remove encroachments built over decades. After clearing thousands of illegal structures at Chandola, bulldozers have now been deployed at Isanpur to demolish encroachments constructed near the lake over nearly four decades. A team of more than 500 AMC staff and workers is carrying out the operation under tight police security.
Chandola Demolition Background
Notably, AMC had previously conducted a major demolition drive near Chandola Lake in Ahmedabad. Before this operation that began on April 29, authorities detained over 800 suspected illegal residents (Bangladeshi nationals) from the area. The operation was conducted in two phases using approximately 40 to 50 bulldozers and over 40 dumpers to clear the encroachments. Besides residential structures, several illegal religious structures were also demolished. Phase-1 removed 4,000 temporary and permanent constructions, clearing 1.50 lakh square meters of land. On May 20, 2025, Phase-2 removed 8,500 temporary and permanent structures, freeing up a total of 2.50 lakh square meters of land.
