Ahmedabad: India’s long-awaited bullet train project is moving towards completion, with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw sharing key updates. Speaking on Saturday (September 27), the minister revealed that the first section of the high-speed rail, stretching around 50 km between Surat and Bilimora in Gujarat, will become operational in 2027. By 2029, the entire Mumbai-Ahmedabad route is expected to start, marking the launch of India’s first bullet train.
During an inspection visit to Surat railway station, Vaishnaw highlighted that construction work is advancing rapidly. He informed that the Thane-Ahmedabad section should be functional by 2028, while the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor will open in 2029. Once operational, the bullet train will cover the distance from Ahmedabad to Mumbai in just 2 hours and 7 minutes. The main line will have a maximum speed capacity of 320 km/h, while loop lines will operate at 80 km/h.
On the safety front, Vaishnaw underlined several special systems being installed along the tracks to minimize vibrations. These include advanced mechanisms to ensure stability in case of high winds or sudden earthquakes, keeping passenger safety as the top priority.
The minister also informed that the project achieved a significant milestone at Surat station with the installation of the first turnout a critical junction where tracks either merge or separate. This stage of the project has introduced new technology, including roller bearings designed to support the smooth functioning of the tracks.
India’s dream of a world-class high-speed rail system is steadily becoming a reality, with trial operations set to start in phases well before the full launch in 2029.
