Ahmedabad Set to Transform Khari Cut Canal with Major Development Project

Ahmedabad – The eastern and southern areas of Ahmedabad are poised for a significant upgrade as Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has approved a substantial 1003 crore rupee proposal from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. This funding is earmarked for the second phase of the Khari Cut Canal redevelopment project, aimed at addressing long-standing issues in the city’s east-south zone.

The Khari Cut Canal Redevelopment Phase-2 will encompass five key stretches. These include: Stretch-1 from the S.P. Ring Road to the Naroda Crematorium; Stretch-2 from Vinjol Wehala to Ghodasar (near Aavkar Hall); Stretch-3 from Ghodasar (Aavkar Hall) to Vatva village; and Stretch-4 and 5 from Vatva village back to the S.P. Ring Road.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will undertake extensive work to revitalize the existing canal infrastructure. Planned improvements include constructing reinforced concrete storm water box structures within the canal, along with developing roads and footpaths alongside it. The project also encompasses building retaining walls, upgrading water supply pipelines and irrigation systems, extending storm water drainage, and improving the sewer network in the area.

Currently, the Khari Cut Canal remains open in several sections, particularly beyond the S.P. Ring Road. This open canal, along with sections previously developed in Phase 1, passes through areas from S.P. Ring Road to Naroda Crematorium via Muthiya village, and from Vinjol Wehala to S.P. Ring Road via Ghodasar Awakar Hall.

Over time, rapid urbanization around the canal has led to problems. As Ahmedabad has expanded, solid waste has accumulated in the canal bed, leading to water pollution and posing risks to public health. Furthermore, the development on both sides of the Khari Cut Canal has created connectivity challenges in the surrounding Town Planning (TP) areas.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has entrusted the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation with this major redevelopment project to efficiently resolve these growing issues.

Significant progress has already been made in addressing the Khari Cut Canal’s problems. In the first phase of the redevelopment, approximately 80 percent of the planned work has been completed in the stretch from Naroda Crematorium to Vinjol Wehala. Phase-1 was allocated a budget of 1338 crore rupees, with over 700 crore rupees already spent.

Now, with Phase 2 approved, the focus shifts to redeveloping the remaining stretches of the Khari Cut Canal. Chief Minister Patel has approved the entire budget for Phase 2 under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Urban Development Scheme, ensuring dedicated funding for this crucial urban infrastructure project.
