Ahmedabad Metro Expands To 62 KM, Now Fourth City With Longest Metro Network In India

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has announced the successful extension of the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro service up to the State Secretariat (Sachivalaya), with seven new metro stations becoming operational. With this expansion, Ahmedabad’s metro network has reached 62 kilometers, making it the fourth longest in India after Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
The government has also started preparations to boost infrastructure in view of Ahmedabad’s bid to host the Olympics. Plans are in place to ensure that all upcoming sports complexes are connected to the metro network for easy and fast transportation. Following the recent extension, metro services will soon reach Mahatma Mandir by the end of this year. Additionally, proposals have been approved to extend the metro to Godhavi and Ahmedabad Airport.
Specifically, an elevated track will connect Koteshwar Road to Taj Circle, after which the metro will continue underground directly to the airport terminal. The airport metro station will also be underground, with lifts and escalators facilitating direct access to the terminal. Work on the Koteshwar Road to Airport stretch, estimated to cost Rs 1,800 crore, is expected to start soon.
Meanwhile, metro operations inside GIFT City have already begun, and a new 10-kilometer line within GIFT City, costing Rs 2,000 crore, will also commence by the end of this year. The metro Phase-2 project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
