Ahmedabad: Heavy Vehicles Banned On 16 Bridges, ‘No Entry’ Boards Installed, Height Barrier Equipment Arrives
Following reports revealing the deteriorated condition of Subhash Bridge, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has implemented stringent safety measures for the city’s critical overpasses. The civic body has restricted heavy vehicle movement on 16 bridges across the city and installed prohibition signage accordingly.
Preparation for Height Barrier Installation
This decision aims to protect bridges from damage caused by overloaded and heavy vehicles while preventing unregulated entry of such vehicles into the city. Height barriers will be installed on 16 bridges, including Mahatma Gandhi Bridge, with necessary equipment already delivered to the sites. Priority for installation will be determined based on survey reports completed for these 16 structures.
Expert Report to Guide Height Barrier Decisions
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has made it clear that height barriers will not be immediately installed on all bridges within its jurisdiction. Any decision regarding height barrier installation across the city’s bridges will only be taken after receiving expert reports.
The ongoing AMC investigation evaluates each bridge’s current condition, structural capacity, and safety standards. Height barrier installation decisions will be based solely on reports and recommendations provided by expert agencies. Additionally, no agency has yet been appointed for height barrier installation work.

AMC Clarification
This entire process is being implemented in accordance with instructions from the State Urban Development and Housing Department and guidelines issued by the Municipal Commissioner during project review meetings. Consultations with bridge experts are currently underway, and appropriate final decisions regarding height barrier installation will be made only after these consultations conclude. The AMC has clarified that any measures concerning bridge safety will be taken only after technical inspections and expert advice.
