Ahmedabad: Chandola Demolition Phase 2 Set To Begin From Tomorrow; Tight Security To Be Deployed

Police Commissioner Chairs Meeting To Discuss Matters

The second phase of the mega-demolition drive in Chandola will begin from tomorrow (May 20), in which illegal encroachments from an estimated area of 2.5 lakh sq.km. will be removed. In this matter, the city police commissioner chaired a meeting today. The meeting was attended by the higher officials of the Municipal Corporation and police department.

It was discovered earlier that the area had become a hub for illegal activities and unauthorized settlements, especially occupied by Bangladeshi nationals. The officials also confirm this information. In Phase 1 of the demolition drive, illegal encroachments on an area of 1.5 lakh sq.km. were removed. Now, in Phase 2, removal of illegal encroachments from an area of 2.5 lakh sq.km. has been arranged.

To ensure that the demolition takes place without any interruptions, 25 teams of State Reserve Police (SRP) will be deployed, along with more than 3,000 police workers. Municipal officers estimate that demolition for this phase might take more than 2 to 3 days.

Meanwhile, AMC is also making arrangements for the displaced families. Planning is in the works to allot alternative accommodation to those affected by the demolition drive. AMC officials informed that this demolition drive is important not only for the city’s development, but also to stop the deeply rooted illegal activities taking place in the area.

In the ongoing year, 250 Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested in Ahmedabad, out of which 207 were detained from areas near the Chandola lake.
