Ahmedabad 385 PGs Served Notices as New Mandatory Society NOC Rule Takes Effect

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has launched a major drive against unauthorized paying guest (PG) hostels across the city. As part of this action, notices have been served to 385 PG operators who were running without mandatory No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from their respective housing societies.

Society NOC made mandatory
According to the new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) issued by AMC, no PG accommodation can operate without an NOC from the housing society. Officials say this provision has been introduced to give societies greater authority to address issues arising from PGs.

Approvals from multiple departments
The civic body has also made it compulsory for PG operators to obtain clearances from the Fire Safety Department, police, and the estate department. Authorities believe these measures will ensure better security and facilities for students and working professionals living in PG accommodations.

Parking guidelines enforced
As PGs are now classified under the hostel category, operators must allocate at least 20 percent of the premises for parking. AMC officials say this will help curb the long-standing parking problems around residential complexes.

Home stays to need tourism approval
If any residential facility is to be operated as a home stay, permission from the Tourism Department will also be mandatory, according to the new guidelines.

Clear framework of rules
By including PGs under the definition of hostels, lodging, and boarding houses, AMC has clarified the regulations and legal framework under which these establishments will function.

30-day application deadline
PG operators have been directed to apply to AMC for the necessary approvals within 30 days of the announcement of the new rules. Operators will also have to comply with the General Development Control Regulations (GDCR).

AMC has warned that any PG or hostel found violating these norms will either be sealed or shut down. Officials maintain that the latest move will bring greater transparency to the PG sector while also addressing problems faced by residents in multiple societies across Ahmedabad.
