Ahmedabad’s 2036 Olympics Bid: Gujarat Issues Eviction Notices to Three Ashrams, Including Asaram’s

Gujarat’s preparations for hosting the 2036 Olympic Games have intensified, with the government issuing eviction notices to three prominent ashrams occupying around 140 acres of land near Motera, Ahmedabad.

The ashrams affected include Asaram Ashram, Bharatiya Seva Samaj, and Sadashiv Pragya Mandal. The land will be utilized to build the proposed Sardar Patel Sports Enclave—a world-class Olympic sports complex featuring stadiums, training facilities, and supporting infrastructure. The development is part of Gujarat’s ambitious Olympic Master Plan, covering approximately 650 acres spanning Motera, Sughad, Bhat, and Koteshwar villages.

As per the government’s plans:

  • 280 acres will house the sports complex with venues and practice facilities.
  • 240 acres are set aside for constructing the Olympic Village, which will accommodate athletes, coaches, and support personnel.
  • 50 acres will form a dedicated infrastructure hub along the Sabarmati Riverfront, providing arrival, departure, and related logistical services.

To oversee the land acquisition and compensation process, the state has appointed a three-member committee comprising the Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner, CEO of Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA), and the District Collector.

However, officials have indicated that Asaram Ashram may not receive compensation due to alleged encroachment on government property and unauthorized constructions. Authorities claim that land originally allotted for charitable activities was illegally repurposed for commercial use, violating the terms of the original grant. Consequently, the committee recommends withholding any compensation to the ashram.
