₹53,000 Crore Fraud in 6 Years: Gujarat, Delhi and West Bengal Record Highest Cyber Crime Complaints

Ahmedabad: India has witnessed fraudulent transactions worth ₹53,000 crore over the past six years, according to a report released by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre. The department, which operates under the Union Home Ministry, is responsible for combating cyber crime and overseeing policies and laws designed to protect Indian citizens from digital threats.

Rise in financial cyber crimes

The report highlights a sharp increase in financial cyber crimes across the country. Investment scams, digital arrest schemes, online fraud, banking fraud and cyber phishing have targeted a large number of victims.

Data from the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal reveals that fraudulent transactions worth ₹19,812.96 crore were reported in 2025 alone, involving 21 lakh cheating-related complaints. Of the total fraud amount in 2025, investment scheme frauds accounted for 77 per cent, while digital arrest scams constituted 8 per cent.

Maharashtra suffers highest financial losses

Among all states, Maharashtra recorded the highest financial losses due to cyber fraud. In 2025, the state registered 28,33,320 complaints, with citizens losing ₹3,203 crore to fraudsters.

Karnataka followed with losses of ₹2,413 crore, while Tamil Nadu reported ₹1,897 crore in fraud-related financial damage. These three states together account for nearly half of the total cyber fraud losses reported nationwide.

Gujarat, Delhi, West Bengal lead in complaint numbers

The report also provided a state-wise breakdown of cyber crime complaints filed during the year. Gujarat, Delhi and West Bengal reported the highest number of cyber fraud complaints in 2025.

Manipur registered 1,807 complaints involving fraud worth ₹16.74 crore. The data underscores the scale of financial damage being caused by fraudulent activities across India.
