Miami: Norway may have lost to former world champions England in the FIFA World Cup quarter-final on Saturday night, but the country’s airline, Norwegian Air, emerged as one of the biggest talking points on social media.
A few days before the thrilling England-Norway quarter-final, Norwegian Air had tagged British Airways on Instagram and proposed a friendly challenge. The airline announced that if Norway lost the quarter-final, it would replace its Instagram profile picture with the British Airways logo for one day. However, if England were to lose, British Airways would have to switch its profile picture to the Norwegian Air logo.
The social media team of Norwegian Air planned the entire campaign, and the challenge quickly went viral across the internet. Airlines from several countries joined the conversation with humorous comments, while thousands of football fans also participated in the online banter.
After Norway suffered a 2-1 extra-time defeat in Miami on Saturday night, Norwegian Air immediately honoured its promise by changing its Instagram profile picture to the British Airways logo. The airline also posted the message, “It’s coming home… Well played, England and British Airways.”
Responding to the gesture, British Airways wrote, “Rivals for 90 minutes, friends forever.” The airline thanked Norwegian Air for the sporting challenge and congratulated England on reaching the FIFA World Cup semi-finals.
Meanwhile, one of the most popular comments on a leading sports channel’s Instagram post took a humorous swipe at Norwegian Air, saying, “You should never make a bet you can’t win.”
