Veteran Actor Deb Mukherjee, Father of Ayan Mukerji, Passes Away at 83

Mumbai: Veteran actor Deb Mukherjee, renowned for his roles in films such as Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, and King Uncle, passed away this morning at the age of 83. He had been unwell and was hospitalized before he took his last breath.

The funeral is scheduled for this evening at Pawan Hans in Mumbai, where the entire Mukherjee family is expected to gather. Mukherjee’s illustrious film career spanned several decades, with his final on-screen appearance in the 2009 film Kaminey, which featured Shahid Kapoor in the lead role.

Apart from his cinematic contributions, Deb Mukherjee was a familiar face during Durga Puja celebrations at the North Bombay Durga Puja pandal. His warmth and affection towards his nieces, Rani Mukerji and Kajol, often captivated the community.

Born on November 14, 1941, in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Deb hailed from a prominent film family. He was the son of Sashadhar Mukherjee—a producer and owner of Filmalaya Studios—and Satidevi Mukherjee, who was the sister of legendary actors Ashok Kumar, Anup Kumar, and Kishore Kumar. With such a rich cinematic heritage, it was only natural that Deb pursued a career in acting.

In his personal life, Deb Mukherjee was married twice. From his first marriage, he had a daughter, Sunita, who is married to filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker. His son, Ayan Mukerji, from his second marriage, has carved out his own niche in the film industry as a director.

In related news, Ayan Mukerji recently made headlines as actor Ranbir Kapoor confirmed that Brahmastra 2 is set to go ahead, with pre-production set to begin after the release of War 2, scheduled to hit theaters on Independence Day this year.
