Tanushree Dutta Stirs Controversy with Mutton Meal After Shravan Fast, Hits Back at Critics

Mumbai – Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta has ignited a heated online debate after sharing a video on social media discussing her decision to break her Shravan fast with a meal containing mutton. The actress, known for her role in sparking India’s #MeToo movement, faced criticism from netizens who questioned her adherence to the traditional fasting practices of the holy Hindu month of Shravan, during which many abstain from non-vegetarian food.

In the video, Dutta explained that she fasted until 7 p.m. and then prepared a nutritious meal of kaali dal, rice, and mutton, emphasizing that her dietary choices align with her Bengali cultural roots and Ayurvedic principles. She stated, “Religious fasts don’t need to be rigid; one can customize according to individual physical needs. This kind of fast works best for me. It builds mental strength, and the high-protein, nutritious diet keeps my body performing at its best.”

The post drew sharp reactions from some social media users. One commenter sarcastically wrote, “Shravan… fast… mutton… fat… #respect,” accompanied by a laughing emoji. Dutta responded firmly, defending her cultural practices: “In Bengal, this is how fasts are done. We fast on water till evening, then eat bhog, which includes goat meat offered to Devi. Different cultures have different practices, and there should be no judgment.” She urged critics to watch her entire video before commenting, adding, “Here come the religious people with their nasty, judgmental attitude.”

Another user accused Dutta of hypocrisy, claiming she was hiding behind faith while harming animals. The actress retorted, “What nonsense are you talking about? You’re insulting Devi, I think. Your comments make no logical sense. Watch the video before commenting. I think you’re mentally unstable.” She further noted that her diet, which includes mutton, is rooted in Ayurveda, where food is considered medicine, and is widely followed in regions like Nepal, where Pashupatinath is revered.

Dutta’s video also highlighted the importance of nutrition for mental health, particularly in light of her recent claims of ongoing harassment. Days earlier, she shared an emotional video alleging persistent harassment at her Mumbai residence, which she said has severely impacted her health.
