Shraddha Kapoor’s ‘Eetha’ Lands In Controversy: Vithabai Narayangaonkar’s Family Demands Title Change

Mumbai: Even before its theatrical release, Shraddha Kapoor’s much awaited biographical drama Eetha has found itself at the centre of a controversy. Family members of legendary Tamasha and Lavani icon Vithabai Bhau Mang Narayangaonkar have objected to the film’s title, urging the makers to rename it Vithabai as a mark of respect for the celebrated folk artist whose life the film potrays.

The demand has also recieved support fromm leaders of the National Congress Party (NCP), who argue that using the title Eetha diminishes Vithabai’s identity and legacy. According to the family, a biopic based on such an influential cultural figure should prominently carry her to preserve her contribution to Maharashtra’s rich folk heritage.

Directed by Laxman Utekar, Eetha stars Shraddha Kapoor in one of the most challenging roles of her career. The recently released teaser showcases the actress as a pregnant Lavani performer, depicting an emotional chapter from Vithabai’s life while highlighting her unwavering dedication to the stage. The teaser has been widely appreciated by audiences for Shraddha’s striking transformation and intense performance.

Vithabai Bhau Mang Narayangaonkar remains one of Maharashtra’s most celebrated Tamasha and Lavani performers. Born into a family of folk artists, she became an iconic cultural figure whose performances helped popularise Lavani across the country. Her life story is remembered for extraordinary resilience, including continuing to perform despite immense personal hardships.

Adding to the praise, noted Lavani performer and Vithabai Gaurav Award recipient Megha Ghadge described Shraddha Kapoor’s performance in the teaser as emotionally moving. She said the visuals brought tears to her eyes and expressed hope that the film would introduce younger generations to Vithabai’s inspiring journey.

Despite the growing controversy over its title, the filmmakers have not yet issued an official statement on whether they will consider renaming the film. As of now, Eetha is scheduled to release in cinemas on August 28, 2026, where it is expected to clash at the box office with Sidharth Malhotra’s Vvan.

With anticipation surrounding Shraddha Kapoor’s comeback in a powerful biographical role and the debate over the film’s title continuing to gather momentum, all eyes are now on the makers’ next move. Whether the controversy results in a title change or fades before release remains to be seen, but it has undoubtedly brought the film into the spotlight weeks ahead of its theatrical debut.
